Five Timeless Design Trends We Love
We all know that trends come and go, but lately we’re seeing a shift to a more ‘timeless’ way of designing spaces. People are being more mindful of the longevity of their interiors and want their investment to not only last a lifetime, but to still be on trend decades down the road. Here are our top picks for trends that have aged gracefully…
1. Marble countertops
Thanks to the Greeks and Romans, marble has been used in interiors for centuries, and we just keep on loving it! Marble is naturally heat resistant, making it perfect for the kitchen where hot pots and pans will be placed on it, as well as in the bathroom so you don’t have to worry about your hot curling iron sitting on the counter. However marble is porous, which means it will stain from wine, oils, and other pigmented liquids. Marble can also scratch or chip. A perfect alternative to achieving this look without those ‘cons’ is to use a manufactured stone like quartz. We love using Silestone’s ‘Calcatta Gold’ because of its luxurious veining and resistance to staining.
2. Terrazzo
Traditionally found in ancient Venetian homes, terrazzo later became and Art Deco staple. Recently it has seen a resurgence in a myriad of colors and shapes, showing up as a countertop material, wall cladding, custom concrete sinks and even as sculptural pieces. Terrazzo is made by mixing chips of stone or glass with concrete and then polishing the final product. It is difficult to control the outcome, which adds to the allure as no two pieces are the same. Local Edmonton artist ‘Ryspot Design’ is a concrete artist who creates incredible terrazzo pieces! We also love the look of Terrazzo in the low maintenance ‘Vail Village’ quartz from Cambria.
3. White Kitchens
A predominantly white kitchen works with both traditional and contemporary designs. We love how white kitchens are also the perfect opportunity to combine design styles into a gorgeous ‘transitional’ space. Keeping the millwork, countertops, and backsplash white means that you can add your own personality and pops of color with funky flooring, bold hardware and unique appliances. Your kitchen becomes a blank canvas to showcase your food to family and friends.
4. Statement Lighting
Adding bold lighting to a space is an easy addition that can add a massive visual impact. Lighting is also a fun way to mix styles, or further accentuate the style you’re going for. A totally unique statement piece in the foyer? A sleek modern chandelier in a traditional dining room? Both unexpected and trans-formative. Being daring in your lighting choices has been one of those trends that will never die, and we’re here for it.
5. Black & white
Name a more iconic duo. On-trend colours can change yearly, while black and white remains timeless. This combination adds instant drama to any space and it can easily swing more traditional or contemporary, or anywhere in between! White tile with black grout, black tile with white grout, a two-tone black and white kitchen… the possibilities are endless with just two colours. This colour combination also makes it incredibly easy to change up your décor as often as you like, bright colours for summer, silver and gold for the holidays – your space can be as minimal or bold as you like, whenever you like.
As we work on designing a space we try to be mindful of what current trends will fizzle out, and which will stick around for ages to come. Tell your grandma ‘sorry’ because her shag carpet and wood paneling didn’t make the cut!
